Approaches you may try at home for initial back pain control caused by herniated disc (slipped disc) in the lumbar region of the spine (the lower back). Controlling the intense pain is the most urgent need when symptoms first appear.

One might feel sharp shooting pain felt in the buttock, thigh and calf, pain intensified by coughing, lower body muscle weakness, muscle spasms or cramps, and numbness and/or tingling in the leg, foot and toes.

Before considering surgical options to mitigate lower back pain, conservative management is the first approach offered for the patients.

Treatments based on physical stimuli such as using heating and cooling methods to relieve pain. Applying heat such as heating pads, adhesive heat wraps or hot bath can help relieve painful muscle spasms; whilst application of ice or a cold pack may be helpful to ease the initial inflammation, soothe the irritated nerves and muscle spasms associated with a lumbar herniated disc. Muscle relaxants either in cream, liquid or pads form may relieve the discomfort associated with severe pain or muscle spasms in the initial treatment periods.

Medications, is also one of the many conservative options available for the management of herniated disc. Painkillers such as Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) may be recommended to the patients for pain relieving and anti-inflammatory effect.

Back pain could be due to many causes, often, back pain may resolve by itself within 6 weeks without treatment. Until then, there are a number of treatment options that aim to help relieve pain and improve mobility.
