The primary symptoms of varicose veins are highly visible, misshapen veins, usually on your legs. You may also have pain, swelling, heaviness, and achiness over or around the enlarged veins.
Endo Venous Ablation involves putting a catheter inside the diseased vein then ablating (occluding) the vein.
This is done through a 2 mm incision. The procedure does not require hospital admission.
At Emirates Hospital, Jumeriah, we offer non-invasive treatment for Varicose Veins, which offers our patients minimal downtime, quick recovery and less pain.

Laser Varicose Veins Treatment in Malaysia
Key Messages
EndoVenous Technique is the current guideline and the standard treatment for varicose veins. Endo-venous treatment meaning to treat within/inside of the diseased veins without cutting open the skin for veins removal.
Laser Varicose Veins is one of the type of minimally invasive EndoVenous Treatment, commonly practiced in many developed countries as a G𝐨𝐥𝐝 S𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝 treatment in treating varicose veins. It is performed under real-time ultrasound image guidance, which can precisely locate the diseased veins and seal the veins with laser. Additionally, multiple veins be in on single or both legs can also be treated in one single treatment.
Laser Varicose Veins Treatment is now available in Malaysia.
What is Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are the veins that can be seen on the leg such as bulges of veins, lumpy veins. Essentially it is caused by increased of the pressure in the vein itself. The function of the vein is to bring the blood up from the leg back to the heart against gravity.
So, most of the time we are standing, gravity will pull the blood down to the legs. The blood is flowing backwards, which subsequently leads to varicose veins that you can see as the bulges of the veins.
Signs you may have varicose veins
The common sign and symptom of varicose veins is aches or pain in the legs, that is usually worse throughout the day, usually in the evening after one tends to stand or walk for a long time. The other symptoms are actually legs swellings. When this gets progressively worse, the skin becomes dry, becomes itchy and patients tend to scratch a lot.
Occasionally they can also have sensation like burning sensation in the legs, and ultimately ulcers will develop in the leg. These ulcers are very difficult to heal unless the veins are treated.
Leg soreness after walking or standing for a long time
Leg swelling
Dry and scaling skin
Compression stocking to relieve leg tiredness
Who are at risk of varicose veins?
♦️ Pregnant lady, especially after given many child births
♦️ Occupations that require prolonged standing or sitting
♦️ Hereditary
♦️ Overweight
Any one can develop varicose veins, irrespective of age.
What if varicose veins left untreated?
If these varicose veins are left untreated, they can have complications. Most commonly the complications are swelling of the legs, skin changes that will involve the skin becomes dark and thicken, and ultimately these will be breakdown become ulcers. There are also other complications such as phlebitis, bleeding and deep vein thrombosis. Phlebitis mean that veins inside develop blood clots. Patient will come in complaining of redness of the skin, painful and it is very tender when you touch it. A lot of times, these are misdiagnosed as infection of the skin call cellulitis, and antibiotics are given which is not the right treatment.
Apart from that, if the blood clots become very extensive and that will cause deep vein thrombosis, which is a dangerous condition. If the blood clot is broken off and travels to the lung and it can be a fatal complication.
Lastly, it can bleed. A lot of patients they present with bleeding as an emergency. It is best to have varicose vein treated at the early stage in order to prevent all these complication from happening.
Treatment Option Available For Varicose Veins
Conventional Open Veins Stripping Surgery
Surgery itself is a very old technique. Vascular surgeons do not perform this procedures as routine over the past 10-15 years.
Chemical Technique
Chemical ablation is good but not as good as endovenous techniques.
Glue
Glue is still very new and we do not know what is the long term outcome yet.
Endovenous Technique (Laser Varicose Veins Treatment)
Endovenous technique is the current guideline and the standard treatment. It is a minimally invasive technique using just needles, wires and catheters. There is no cut in the legs to perform this technique.
To perform endovenous technique, we use laser. The laser that is being use is the latest laser 1470nm frequency and has been proven to have the best result. Laser Varicose Veins is a fast treatment which normally takes about an hour or less. During the procedure, we use an ultrasound to scan and identify the diseased vein. Once the vein is identified, we will then inject the local anaesthesia around the treatment area. A needle will be inserted into the diseased vein under real-time ultrasound guidance. As a result, it is a very accurate technique. "Nothing can go wrong as far as I am concern if it is being performed by a qualified Vascular Surgeon" said by Dr. Ho.
Once the needle is inserted into the vein, laser energy will be activated, and the catheter will be pulled out slowly segment by segment until the whole diseased vein is treated. Essentially the laser produces heat at the end of the tip of the fiber, the heat itself will shut down the vein that is causing the problem.
What to expect after Laser Varicose Veins Treatment?
The treated leg(s) will be bandage for about 48 hours. Endovenous Laser Treatment has many advantages. Firstly, it can be performed under Local Anaesthesia (LA), which mean essentially patients do not need to stay in the hospital. Secondly, it is also minimally invasive which means there is no cut to the legs, so there is no pain, very minimal bruises if it were be compared to surgery.
No Cut
No Pain
Go home on the same day
Most importantly, patients can mobile (walk) straight away.
